DARKEYE APP
This mobile app (Android only) is the result of a 2-year long investigation for the Final Research Project of my Bachelor's and Master's Degree, under the name of "The Art of Disguise: Investigating Dark Patterns inside the video games' Retention and Monetization Techniques". The project aims to describe and compile the most used techniques in the design of video games in the current landscape to retain the players and make them lose the sense of control over their actions, known as Dark Patterns.Following the results obtained, an app was developed to act as a tool to disclose how these practices behave and to provide an index over the potential dangerousness of a given video game, according to previously established formulas.
Dark Pattern Glossary
This section of the App features a list of 30 of the most common Dark Patterns inside the current video game scene. Here, the player will be able to learn more about each deceptive technique, how it works, its possible consequences and potential synergies with other design patterns. Test Your Game
This tool lets players evaluate any video game by answering questions across five Dark Pattern categories, generating a score that reflects how frequently these techniques appear in the analyzed game.The final score is presented through a Pie Chart, providing an understandable and accessible analysis for all kinds of users, from game developers to the casual public.
Mini Games
As well as the mentioned tools, the app also features a set of mini games aimed to illustrate the behavior of each of the hidden design tricks inside different gaming contexts. At the current version, 6 simple games have been developed covering up to 17 Dark Patterns.Check out some screenshots of the mini games and feel free to download the app yourself to try them out!
